(Re)Born to Fly

U.S. Army Captain Etherea Serendipity was a Military Intelligence officer serving in Afghanistan.  She was attached to a civil affairs unit en route to inspect a recently built school in an outlying village when, a month short of the end of her rotation, the concussive force from an IED blast took her life. 

A month later on the other side of the world, U.S. Air Force Major Donna Domenitzo was doing a flight demonstration at an air show when she ingested a bird through the intake of her F-16, causing her engine to flame out.  She managed to maneuver the aircraft away from a populated area--saving countless lives--but was herself killed upon ejecting.

They were honored posthumously with decorations for valor and their families were given folded flags at closed casket military funerals.  But life wasn't done with MAJ Domenitzo and CPT Serendipity yet.  Their bodies had been preserved in cryostasis, and they were revived by Project Phoenix, a project that "did not, does not, and will never exist," using technology of a highly classified origin that not only brought them back to life, but imbued them with incredible powers.  Now they're America's secret weapon, able to get the job done when nothing else can.
